Meg 2: The Trench.
By Ben Wheatley.
My rating ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ out of 5 stars.

An exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean of a daring research team spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival.

When I watched the first Meg movie, The Meg, I was a bit disappointed. Apart from the expected lousy low-IQ Hollywood script the PG-13 rating was really dragging the movie down. After all, what is the point of making a movie about a pre-historical monster shark and then not really have some monster mayhem and gore in the movie?

This one still has a silly PG-13 rating so it is rather lacking in the gore department but having said that, there was quite a bit more mayhem and the Meg got quite a few snacks as the movie progresses.

The script is the usual, not too intelligent, stuff that you would expect to come out from Hollywood but, in that context, it is not too bad. Especially it lets the action flow nicely from one scene to the other.

Speaking of action, there plenty of that in this movie and they sure as hell has not wasted the talents of Statham in that department. After all, what really makes this movie worthwhile watching is two thirds Statham and one third big monsters. The rest is at best decoration and sometimes just a nuisance.

I did like that the story added a few more monsters than “just” a Meg in this movie and also that the bad guys do indeed get shot, eaten or drowned as the movie accelerates towards the end.

Sure the movie has its usual share of plot holes, silliness and unbelievable stunts but it was rarely annoying but rather quite fun to watch most of the time.

I very barely gave the first movie three stars but this one, I was tempted to give it four but I stopped at three and a half.
