Well, that was a disappointment! I am afraid this series is going downhill for me quite rapidly. It has turned into some soap opera where the fantasy is used more to hide a poor story rather than the important element it is supposed to be in a urban fantasy book.
The setup is a more or less standard one. Young girl discovers that she has magical power. Luckily this just happens to coincide with a nefarious bad guy’s scheduled overtaking of the world…or something. The dialogue will not give you any points at your local Mensa club but it is lighthearted and fun. On the whole this is how I would describe the book, light, simple and fun reading.
The Federal Witch is back in this 7th instalment in The Federal Witch series. So is Anastasia by the way although she does not join the team right away. As usual it is a rather fun read with equal measures of magic action, bantering, detective work and silly unicorns.
It is not that the book is outrageously bad it is just that it fizzles around spending waaaay too much time on soap opera style crap, emotional outbursts, romance a’la Hollywood etc. than on actually developing some real urban fantasy adventure story.
