Death Race – Enjoyable action flick

Death RaceDeath Race by Paul W.S. Anderson on CanalSat (SyFy)
My rating: 7 out of 10 stars

Ex-con Jensen Ames is forced by the warden of a notorious prison to compete in our post-industrial world’s most popular sport: a car race in which inmates must brutalize and kill one another on the road to victory.

Generally I am a bit cautious concerning evening movies on SyFy but then this was not one of SyFy’s in house productions so we had a go at watching it.  What we found was a simple and very enjoyable action movie.

Men beating each other up with machine gun equipped race cars and female co-drivers wiggling their behinds. Does it sound brain dead? Yes it does. Was it fun? Yes it was! The story is fairly silly and unbelievable, the acting is acceptable but the action is simply loads of fun.

It helps of course if you like cars (which I do) and like guns (which I do) and like action flicks (which I also do). This was just the right kind of movie for me to watch on a working day evening. No tiresome thinking required, just sit down and watch cars and people getting shot up with a bit of macho talk in between.

Of course this is the kind of movie that the self proclaimed “critics” love to write down. It does look like the audience thinks otherwise though as it currently holds a 6.4 rating at IMDb which is pretty good for this kind of movie.

Although the plot have a bit of cartoon feeling over it the film is well done technically. The car races and special effects are good and so is the rest of the filming. And there was a happy ending for us lovers of this kind of simple entertainment :-).
