Three years ago entomologist Dr. Susan Tyler genetically created an insect to kill cockroaches carrying a virulent disease, now the insects are out to destroy their only predator, mankind!
This is a movie that the kids absolutely wanted to see and I thought, since it was directed by Guillermo del Toro, that it might be okay even though it was on SyFy who doesn’t exactly have the reputation for quality movies.
Anyway, the movie was okay but certainly not great. It’s a fairly standard horror movie about human genetic meddling going amok in the New York underground. The individual scenes, including the monster effects are quite okay done. Many of the scenes gave the appropriate “creepy” effect for this kind of movie. This part del Toro got right but then he usually does.
Unfortunately it was a fairly standard horror movie in the way the plot rolled out as well, as in it not being very logical. Kids finding giant monster eggs in a dark subway tunnel and not being scared away? Scientists finding a severe threat, possibly to all human kind, and they mess around in the subway tunnels themselves with almost zero equipment, yeah, very likely. And by all means do split up, it is a horror movie after all.
Well, I guess it was on a fairly low budget. It was also done from a short story and was originally planned as a 30 minutes short feature. All of it which shows. Given all of this I would say it was a fairly okay movie still. Certainly far better than a lot of the stuff that SyFy normally shows.
