Jonathan was, like myself, really keen on watching Space Battleship Yamato so when there wasn’t really anything we cared to see last Friday we sat down and plopped the disc into the Blu-ray player.
As I mentioned in my previous post this film beat Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows at the box office in Japan when it came out in 2010. Well, now having watched it, I have to say that the film was okay…but definitely not that good. At least not unless you’re a Japanese teenager.
The effects where quite okay and, together with the ship designs, sometimes rather original. However, it showed quite a lot that the film originated as a Japanese manga series. There was a lot of Manga silliness in the movie and the story was rather simple with fairly childish plot elements. Acting was also more at the level of a TV-series for children.
All in all it was a fun film to watch for a Sci-Fi fan and I rate it 6 out of 10 stars in my Movie Collection.
